Hello lovely people – friends, fans and followers, subscribers new, old, and yet-to-come – thanks for being here once again. I hope your enjoying these weekly blogs. I certainly love having my own space to share things.
It’s been a pretty big couple of weeks for the industry as we all welcome the news that the Victorian Government will begin to decriminalise sex work in early ’22. This is fantastic news, and something sex workers have been striving for over many, MANY years, and I want to extend my personal thanks to each and every one of my peers who put energy into this long battle.
Like many other sex workers most of my work is online – chatting on cam, producing and uploading films and photos, scouting locations, advertising, blogging, providing content to various platforms. But it’s really hard when our laws a) are so outdated when it comes to sex work, and b) depend on one person to deem appropriate content when it comes to online content. Although decriminalisation is a great thing for Victoria, we still need amendments to the Online Safety Bill 2021 (OSB2021) for online sex workers to make the most of decrim. And sadly, the OSB2021 is Federal legislation, and already law so we have our work cut out for us.
Don’t get me wrong, a lot of the bill is pretty solid and goes a long way towards it intended aim of making the internet a safer place. Most of the legislation is great and aims to protect people from bullying and harassment online, including an increase to the maximum penalty for harassment. It also intends to block sites hosting violent or terrorist content from access within Australia. It’s mostly decent stuff. For the adult industry the real issue is Part 9 which (tl/dr) gives a single human – the eSafety Commissioner – the power to remove online adult content from any website, platform, app or search engine.
There are many problems with this part of the Bill, many of which I outlined earlier this year when interviewed by The Guardian.
I really encourage you to go have a listen. The effects of this bill aren’t limited to adult enterprises. It could effect online exhibitionists, erotic artists, as well as those who just love to post a naked selfy. And I know you don’t want to see any content dry spells. Be an real ally and get informed!
Fingers crossed that Decriminalisation can go some way to addressing the current issues at a federal level. Reason Party member, Fiona Patten, led the review into our outdated licensing model and made the recommendations for decrim. She acknowledged that laws need to be up-to-date to reflect how much sex work is now provided online, and that space to advertise and operate in that space must be provided. I definitely have my Hopeful Hat on. I love providing this space, and would be so happy to do it with some ongoing security.
